Wensleydale Heifer Top 200 in Britain, Top 10 in North East and Yorkshire.
A Wensleydale landmark since the 1600s the once bucolic Heifer is now a country-chic Boutique Hotel with food aspirations. Despite the Bovine name seafood is the kitchen’s main business and visitors can choose to eat informally in the bare tabled fish bar or splash out amid the ‘contemporary decadence' of the main restaurant.
Pretty whitewashed former pub on the main street of the village. Quirky themed rooms --- Character lounge with roaring fire --- Dine in "The Fish Bar" or at clothed tables in the beamed restaurant, cooking has strong seafood base.
Two AA Rosettes awarded for culinary excellence
Located in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales this traditional 17th century coaching inn has been fully refurbish and retaining many of the original features whilst offering guest modern comfort in the 13 Dales themed bedrooms as well as an inviting lounge with roaring log fires and real ales, the pub offers two different dinning experiences, the fish bar is less formal with sea grass flooring, wooden tables and rattan chairs, whilst the light and airy restaurant has a much more contempory and casually formal atmosphere
Two AA Rosettes awarded for culinary excellence
Describing itself as 'Boutique style' this 17th century coaching inn is very much in the 21st century. The bedrooms with egyptian cotton linen and molton brown toiletries as standard are each designed with a unique and interesting theme - for example, Black Sheep, Night at The Movies, True Romantics and for chocolate lovers there is the obvious choice of a bedroom where you can eat as much chocolate as you like. The kitchen prides itself on sourcing the freshest fish and locally reared meats. Winner of the AA funkiest B&B of the year award 2011/2012
The Wensleydale Heifer continues to win over tourists and locals with it's beguiling mix of a log-fired pub, smart dining and seafood. Spanking fresh fish has been given an emphatic thumbs-up on eager-to-please menus....
Quirky themed rooms --- Character lounge with roaring fire --- Dine in "The Fish Bar" or at clothed tables in the beamed restaurant, cooking has strong seafood base.
The Wensleydale Heifer one of the best pub restaurants around with especially good fish and brilliant service - this incongruously land-locked Dales inn wins hearty endorsements from practically all of the many people who report on it...

The Best 20 Restaurant with Rooms in Britain – The Wensleydale Heifer
Great food, exciting wine and – thanks to stylish accommodation that's just a short stager away – absolutely no arguments over whose driving home...
....Top quality rooms. Yorkshire-sized portions of excellent food and good service. What more do you need?...
....The Heifer is a soothing kind of place, staffed by knowledgeable passionate people whose main aim appears to be to provide utter contentment. The food is bold and tasty, with carefully concocted combinations and hearty portions...
...The service was sharp. The atmosphere was sophisticated and lively. The food was first rate...
Be lulled into a false sense of 'Leather armchair by the fire.' Enter the Fish Bar and you'll be met with wall to wall seagrass and modish-naff touches. There is also a shiny, slightly more formal but still kitted out with joke crockery, dinning room guaranteed to put a smile on your face. The welcome is warm and the food is sensational.
Pretty whitewashed former pub. Quirky themed bedrooms boast quality linen and all mod cons. Characterful lounge with roaring fire. Dine in Fish Bar or at clothed tables in beamed restaurant. Cooking has strong seafood base.
The fish bar here has won David Moss, the owner/chef, Seafish Pub of the Year. It's a big hit with the locals. There is a huge range of shellfish or there's surf and turf for £34.75, and the steak is a 10oz one. There's another, more formal, dining area, cosy fires and a good atmosphere.
A cosy village pub in the Dales; a sophisticated seafood restaurant where the Whitby lobster comes with black truffle; and a quirky boutique hotel with each room uniquely themed (chocolate, whisky, movies, cows) - this place is schizophrenia gone very, very right. There are two lovely walks just beyond the front door, too, so that's your whole weekend sorted.
Do you have a favourite restaurant, or pub?
The Wensleydale Heifer at West Witton, in the high street, gets my vote every time. The food is beyond excellence, the seafood is superb, and I've had the best surf and turf there that I've had anywhere in the world – and I've been about a bit. Great staff, great atmosphere.

The welcome is warm and the food is sensational. The Whitby cod in crispy Black Sheep batter with peas and fat chips are the best fish and chips this side of Whitby's "Magpie Cafe". Chef David Moss, ex. "Crab and Lobster" at Asenby, has achieved the impossible; a great fish restaurant as far from the sea as you can get .
This Dales Inn has an excellent reputation for serving hearty portions of seafood. The themed rooms include CHOCOLATE which has dark brown furniture, a drawer full of choccy treats and glassfuls of more chocs....Yum!!!
Fine seafood, fine wine list, fine (but relaxed) service and with just enough quirkiness and kitsch to make you smile.
The Wensleydale Heifer, an upscale restaurant in West Witton is famed for its "Whitby Fish & Chips" served in newspaper, as well as its roasted scallops, lobster any-way-you-want and grilled prawns. Its incredibly popular, so make sure you book ahead.
New owners have transformed the ground floor of the 17th-century coaching inn, and introduced a light and modern fish restaurant and bistro. A good selection of real ales are offered and a roaring log fire warms the inviting lounge. Spacious bedrooms are comfortably furnished.
About as far from the sea as you an get but the best seafood we've had anywhere, this decidedly land-locked Dales inn has quite a name for its cuisine, and - "in finest Yorkshire tradition" - the portions are "huge" too.
Top notch seafood in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales
Fish features strongly at the Wensleydale Heifer, despite its countryside location. The inn has its own restaurant and fish bar, both with a chic contemporary look. The menu has something to appeal to all tastes, from traditional fish and chips served in newspaper to warm salad of maple roasted lobster.
"They don't get any better than this" writes a dedicated fish and chips eater of 60 years experience.
This luxury boutique hotel near Leyburn in the Yorkshire Dales offer treats for Rover and celebrates local heroes Wallace & Gromit and James Herriot with a themed room.
"Reel in a prize catch with Whitby cod, crackling Black Sheep Bitter batter, fat chips and posh peas which is the best fish supper you'll eat all year, in or out of newspaper."
The accent is on the excellent food, with a distinguished menu of dishes such as Whitby cod, Aberdeen Angus rib steak, maple roast native lobster, slow-braisind shoulder of West Burton lamb and their famous fish pie with a mature cheddar and nutmeg crust.
The superb accommodation includes four-poster rooms and provides guests with every comfort.
A high-end fish restaurant, smack in the middle of the country? Unlikely, but true. The lounge/bar of this rambling, white washed pub shouts comfort - all leather sofas and tartan carpet - but step into the "fish bar" and its as camp as Christmas. Knowingly naff details, such as joke crockery (the plate your dinner comes on is in the form of a newspaper) and potty pictures of seagoing cows on the walls belie the sensational dishes brought from the kitchen by local lasses in striped Breton jerseys. Whitby cod, crackling Black Sheep Bitter batter, fat chips and posh peas is the best fish supper you'll eat all year, in or out of newspaper.
Three more fishy delights
The Wensleydale Heifer
A high-end fish restaurant, smack in the middle of the country, with not a whiff of ozone? Unlikely, but true. Chef David Moss raises the bar with classic dishes, kitsch classics and the best fish supper you'll have all year.
Seriousness is reserved for the kitchen where a sizeable brigade turns out starters that can range from a perky beef salad to a fish soup that many French coastal chefs would envy.
The New Heifer is a Prize Beast.
Charming themed bedrooms are elegantly decorated and some provide mini-suites and four-poster beds. No luxury is spared: each room has Egyptian cotton sheets, Molton Brown toiletries and luxurious bath towels. Staff are experienced and offer excellent service.
Fish and chips, no matter how posh, may seem a cop-out in a place that offers itself as a fully-fledged seafood restaurant, but it takes technique to fry properly just as it takes discretion to assemble a simple dish so well. Someone in the large and manifestly expensive kitchen has these attributes.
A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, among the top five Sunday lunches in recent years.
The eclectic menu cannot fail to tempt the most discerning diner. The Wensleydale Heifer also offers a wide range of locally-produced farmed meats and produce.
Great name, even better menu. The Wensleydale Heifer was a pub, and is now a restaurant that specialises in seafood. Daily deliveries from nine separate fish suppliers ensure consistency and quality.
